2nd PET scan changes treatment for nearly half of prostate cancer patients - Radiology Business

A recent study published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine reveals that undergoing a second PSMA PET scan significantly alters treatment for nearly half of prostate cancer patients who initially had negative results. Canadian researchers analyzed data from over 4,000 patients, identifying 210 who had repeat imaging. The study found that about 56% of these patients showed evidence of disease on the follow-up scan, necessitating changes in management for nearly 50%, especially among those with oligometastatic cancer. The results highlight the importance of PSMA PET scans in effectively managing recurrent prostate cancer after initial treatment, especially in patients with higher PSA levels and a shorter PSA doubling time.
